IRD GST returns and myIR filing in New Zealand
When you must register for GST, how often you file, and where invoicing fits. Based on Inland Revenue guidance; confirm details at ird.govt.nz.
GST registration: the $60,000 threshold
You must register for GST when you carry out a taxable activity and your turnover is at least $60,000 in a 12-month period, past or expected. Below that you can register voluntarily, which lets you claim GST on business purchases. Some situations have specific rules, so read Inland Revenue's Registering for GST guidance or ask a tax agent if you are unsure.
Filing frequency
Once registered you file a GST return for each taxable period. Two-monthly is the usual option for sales under $24 million. Monthly filing is required if sales are over $24 million. Six-monthly filing is available if sales are under $500,000. Your taxable period needs to align with your balance date. Returns are due after the end of each period, so check the exact due dates on ird.govt.nz.
How returns are filed
GST returns are filed through myIR, Inland Revenue's online services, through accounting software that connects to Inland Revenue, or through a tax agent. Which route suits you depends on your software and how you work with your accountant. 4invoices does not connect to Inland Revenue and does not file returns, so your return is prepared and filed elsewhere.
What your invoices need to support the return
Your return summarises GST charged on sales and GST paid on purchases, so each invoice should show the GST treatment clearly: 15% for standard supplies, 0% for zero-rated supplies such as many exports, and no GST for exempt supplies. Keep your invoices and other records as evidence for the figures in your return. Inland Revenue's GST guide (IR375) sets out what taxable supply information must contain.
Is GST reporting real-time?
No. GST is reported in periodic returns. We are not aware of an announced Inland Revenue mandate for invoice-level or real-time GST reporting, and Peppol e-invoicing is voluntary for businesses. If that changes, Inland Revenue will announce it, so check ird.govt.nz rather than relying on predictions.
Where 4invoices fits
4invoices creates invoices with a GST rate on each line, in any currency with an exchange rate, and lets you download them as PDF. Those invoices are your records. It does not calculate, prepare or file your GST return.
