NZBN: the New Zealand Business Number for invoicing

What an NZBN is, how it differs from a GST number, and how to look up a customer's NZBN.

A New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) is a unique 13-digit identifier for a business, held on the NZBN register run by MBIE. The number uses the GS1 Global Location Number format, so it fits international e-business standards, including Peppol. Companies get an NZBN when they are registered. Sole traders and partnerships can get one for free. An NZBN is not a GST number. A business can have an NZBN without being registered for GST. When you invoice a customer, the NZBN can be a useful way to identify them. 4invoices does not look up or verify an NZBN. You type the number in and it prints on the invoice.

  • An NZBN has 13 digits and comes from the NZBN register.
  • Companies receive one on registration. Sole traders and partnerships can apply for free.
  • It is separate from a GST number issued by IRD.
  • It can identify a GST-registered buyer on a larger invoice, alongside other details.

How it works

Ask a new business customer for their NZBN and their GST number if they are GST-registered. They are two different numbers.

Look the NZBN up on the public NZBN register at nzbn.govt.nz to confirm the legal name and trading name.

Record the customer's details in your own records. If the buyer is GST-registered and the invoice is over $1,000 including GST, the taxable supply information must show the buyer's name and at least one identifying detail. IRD lists an NZBN as one of the accepted options, next to address, phone, email or trading name.

Show your own GST number on invoices if you are GST-registered. Your NZBN is optional information you can add.

Check the register again if a customer's details change, for example after a company name change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NZBN as a sole trader?

It is not a legal requirement to hold one. It is free to register, and it identifies your business to customers and on the Peppol network. Ask MBIE or check nzbn.govt.nz for the current process.

What is the difference between an NZBN and a GST number?

The NZBN identifies the business on the NZBN register. The GST number is issued by IRD when a business registers for GST. A business can have an NZBN and no GST number. Only a GST-registered supplier can charge GST and show a GST number.

How do I look up a customer's NZBN?

Search by name or number on the free NZBN register at nzbn.govt.nz. It shows the entity's legal name, trading names and status.

Does 4invoices verify NZBNs or GST numbers?

No. 4invoices does not check any tax or business number against a register. You enter the details, and they appear on your invoice. Check the register yourself before you rely on a number.
