Hong Kong business registration and invoicing

Register with the IRD within one month of starting business, then invoice under that name.

Businesses in Hong Kong must register with the Business Registration Office of the Inland Revenue Department. You have one month after you start business to apply. The certificate is valid for a set period and must be displayed at the business premises. Your invoices should use the same name as your registration.

  • Apply within one month after you commence business.
  • Display the certificate at your premises.
  • Renew before it expires and report changes to your particulars.
  • Applications and renewals are offered through eTAX.

How it works

Register the business with the IRD.

Note the business name and number on your certificate.

Put that name and your address on every invoice.

Update the invoice template if the name or address changes.

Legal framework

  • Business Registration Ordinance (Cap. 310).
  • IRD: Business Registration (ird.gov.hk).

Frequently asked questions

Is the business registration number mandatory on an invoice?

We found no rule that requires it. Many businesses show it, so buyers can identify them.

Do freelancers need to register?

If you carry on a business in Hong Kong, the IRD says you must. Ask the IRD if you are unsure.

Does 4invoices register my business?

No. 4invoices creates invoices with a tax rate per line, supports any currency with an exchange rate, and downloads a PDF. It does not connect to the Inland Revenue Department, file returns or keep legally validated archives. The 6-month free trial needs no card.
