GST registration threshold Singapore S$1 million
When a business must register for GST, when it may choose to and what follows registration.
A business in Singapore must register for GST when its taxable turnover exceeds S$1 million. IRAS applies this in two ways: on a retrospective basis, looking at the calendar year just ended, and on a prospective basis, when you have reasonable grounds to expect taxable turnover above S$1 million over the next 12 months. A business below the threshold can register voluntarily, but a voluntarily registered business generally has to stay registered for at least two years. Once registered, the business charges GST on its taxable supplies, issues tax invoices and files GST returns. Confirm current deadlines on iras.gov.sg.
- Compulsory registration above S$1 million taxable turnover.
- Retrospective and prospective tests both apply.
- Voluntary registration is possible below the threshold.
- Voluntary registrants generally stay registered for at least two years.
How it works
Track taxable turnover during the calendar year and forecast the next 12 months.
If a test is met, apply to IRAS within the deadline stated on iras.gov.sg for that test.
If you register voluntarily, weigh the benefit of recovering input tax against the duties of charging GST and filing returns.
After registration, show your GST registration number on tax invoices and charge GST at the correct rate.
Check whether the IRAS InvoiceNow phase for your registration type applies to you.
Legal framework
- IRAS: Do I need to register for GST?
- IRAS: Cancelling GST registration.
- Goods and Services Tax Act 1993.
- IRAS: GST InvoiceNow Requirement.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GST registration threshold in Singapore?
S$1 million of taxable turnover. Both a look-back and a forward-looking test are used by IRAS.
Can I register below the threshold?
Yes, voluntarily. Consider the ongoing obligations and the minimum registration period before applying.
What changes after registration?
You charge GST on taxable supplies, issue tax invoices with your GST registration number and file GST returns. New registrants may also fall under the GST InvoiceNow requirement.
Does 4invoices register me for GST or monitor the threshold?
No. 4invoices does not connect to IRAS, does not register you and does not monitor turnover. It creates invoices with the tax rate you set per line, including 0%, and produces the PDF.
