FIRS / NRS e-invoicing

Nigerian e-invoicing: invoicing software or Access Point Provider?

Creating an invoice and having it validated by the tax authority are two different jobs.

Nigeria's e-invoicing system, the Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS), is run by the Nigeria Revenue Service. NRS says taxpayers integrate their systems through approved Access Point Providers (APPs) or system integrators. A plain invoicing tool such as 4invoices creates the invoice document: lines, VAT rate, currency and PDF. It does not transmit to MBS or issue an Invoice Reference Number. If you are in a category with a mandatory date, you need an approved route. If you are not yet obliged, a simple tool still produces clear invoices.

  • Invoice creation and MBS validation are separate steps.
  • NRS says integration goes through approved APPs or system integrators.
  • Only the MBS system issues an IRN.
  • AI or PDF tools do not replace onboarding.

How it works

Check whether your turnover puts you inside the current mandatory phase.

If yes, choose an approved APP or integrator from NRS guidance.

If not yet, keep issuing clear invoices with the TIN, VAT rate and totals.

Keep records of invoices, credit notes and payments.

Revisit the question when your category's date approaches.

Legal framework

  • NRS public notice on the National E-Invoicing and Electronic Fiscal System.
  • National Regulatory Guideline for Electronic Invoicing in Nigeria 2025 (NITDA).
  • Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI read my invoices and make them compliant?

Reading a document is not the same as validating it with NRS. Only the MBS system can validate an invoice and return an IRN.

Is a PDF invoice enough?

For taxpayers inside the mandatory phase, no: invoices must go through the system. Outside it, check with your adviser.

Who are Access Point Providers?

Service providers approved by NRS to connect taxpayer systems to MBS. Use the official list.

Does 4invoices connect to NRS or the Merchant Buyer Solution?

No. 4invoices creates invoices with a VAT or tax rate per line, supports any currency with an exchange rate, and lets you download a PDF. It does not connect to the tax authority, does not clear or validate invoices, does not issue an Invoice Reference Number and does not file returns. If you must use MBS, use an approved Access Point Provider or system integrator.
