KRA PIN format in Kenya
A KRA PIN has 11 characters. Here is how to read one and where it goes on an invoice.
A KRA PIN has 11 characters: one letter, nine digits and one closing letter. Commonly, individual PINs start with A and PINs for companies and other entities start with P. The digits are assigned by KRA and the last letter is a check character. The format alone does not prove a PIN is real or active. Only KRA can confirm that, for example through its official checker on iTax.
- Length: 11 characters.
- Pattern: letter + 9 digits + letter, for example A123456789B (sample, not real).
- Usually A for individuals and P for companies and other entities.
- A correct format is not proof that the PIN is valid.
How it works
Read the PIN as three parts: the first letter, the nine digits and the last letter.
Copy it exactly from your KRA PIN certificate, without spaces or lower case mistakes.
Write your PIN on your invoices and, for business customers, ask for theirs and record it.
To check that a PIN is real, use the KRA verification option on iTax. Do not rely on format alone.
If a customer's PIN is rejected in your eTIMS solution, ask them to confirm it against their certificate.
Legal framework
- Tax Procedures Act 2015 (registration and PIN).
- KRA PIN guidance (kra.go.ke).
Frequently asked questions
Does a KRA PIN always start with A?
No. It commonly starts with A for individuals and P for companies and other entities. Use the PIN exactly as printed on the KRA certificate.
How many digits does a KRA PIN have?
Nine digits, between a leading letter and a closing letter, so 11 characters in total.
Can I validate a PIN by its format?
A format check only catches typing mistakes. It cannot tell you if the PIN is registered or active. Use the KRA checker on iTax.
Where does the PIN go on an invoice?
Show the supplier's PIN, and the buyer's PIN on business invoices where required. Check what your eTIMS solution and KRA rules require for the invoice you issue.
Does 4invoices verify KRA PINs?
No. 4invoices does not check PINs against KRA. You enter the PIN yourself on the invoice. You can also set a VAT rate per line, invoice in any currency with an exchange rate and download a PDF, free for 6 months without a card.
